Picture hundreds of bookkeepers from around Canada all converging in Toronto to expand, learn and grow as a group for four days.
Now picture that same group having fun, partying and celebrating the brightest of the bright, getting together and not only becoming excited about technology, but sharing how it’s helping them help others.
And lastly, how this same group of bookkeepers cried when two of their own said goodbye.
Saturday was the final day of the IPBC Ignite conference — hosted annually by the Institute of Professional Bookkeepers of Canada — that brings together over 700 professionals and allows them to learn not only from each other, but from the brightest minds in our industry. The focus is to absorb as much as possible so that we, the professional, can bring more to you, our customer. This includes learning to maximize the tools available to us, how to better understand how these tools work, and why we may or might not want to include them in our toolboxes.
So, what did we takeaway from this conference? A number of speakers talked about how they were able to maximize SaaS (Software as a Service) programs in their practices and how these applications made a difference. Still, more speakers spoke about changes in the industry and how we can bring this information to our customers and the population at large. And even more spoke about the technology that we are using today and how we can better use it to help us all (BIG shout out here to Kellie Parks and her breakout session on Google Chrome!)
The keynotes each day spoke about changes: Where we were in the past, where we are today, and where we are going into the future. We also discussed how these changes have impacted us through time, and the possible impact on tomorrow. One keynote stood out as a journey from early 1960’s to current day and the revolution of computers, accounting, and where we might end up.
We found out that we now can bring a concise, clear and focused group of professionals to each area of our country by testing members based on our experience, our educational levels, and our focus on reaching out to you, our customer.
These four days are a whirlwind of excitement, friendship, and learning, but most of all, exhilaration. Each year I look forward to IPBC Ignite, not for the partying, but for what I can take away.
It’s about watching the growth of peers and individuals, and growing the number of Certified Professional Bookkeepers (CPB) in our industry so that you know you are working with the best of the best; the brightest of the bright; the focused and the dedicated. It’s about expanding our horizons and learning how we can collaborate with others so that we can bring the best and brightest team to you.
It has been a great conference this year, and the IPBC outdid themselves yet again. It will be interesting to see what they do to top this year’s conference when we all crash Calgary for the week of September 12 – 15, 2018. See you in Calgary!
Until the next time,
